my first dictionary
A very good friend of mine requested me to babysit her 5 year old son today. Jethro and Cerise spending time after school turned out to be entertaining for me. At one point, they made it pretty clear to me how children of their age derive meaning to everyday words from their own everyday experiences, in particular with their own mothers.
Over afternoon tea...
ME: Don't eat too fast. It's not a contest and we're not in a hurry.
CERISE: What does 'in a hurry' mean?
JETHRO: 'in a hurry' means you are late for a birthday party or something. (uhuh... i can't say my friend Langging/Maria is always on the dot)
CERISE: when you shop around too much you turn up late at someone's place. (that's ME!)
